EDIT 451 Posting 7- Distance Learning

Quoted from WIKIPEDIA.org."In Distance Education, students may not be required to be present in a classroom, but that also may be a question of option. As for an electronic classroom or Virtual Learning Environment, it may or may not be a part of a distance education set up. Electronic classrooms can be both on campus and off campus. We would call such institutions as using a 'flexible' delivery mode."

From my friend's experience and mine. I would say E learning, distance learning and hybrid class are almost the same. Its difference is how the instructor plan and carry out the lesson.
I would define it as "learners don't need to be physically on site and learn by using computer"
I asked several friends who have the on line learning experiences. For example,CSULA online course, UCLA on line course and English learning online. Learners feel frustrated and isolated when they have assignment questions need to be figured out. and they feel isolated because there is no verbal communication between any other even your instructor.

EDIT 550 the second life which requires the students be on time in front of Internet accessible computers. This is a way that distance learning, elearning work. The other way to do the distance learning and elearning is that the students don't need to be in from of an Internet accessible computer in a certain time. The students can manage their time whenever they want to start the lesson. As long as they finish the assigned video, readings, and assignments before the deadline. Then they've done!

Sharing difference distance learning and elearning experiences with other learner makes me more expecting the Second life learning experience. Since now most the schools like UCLA and CSULA still provide the regular online course(students only need to watch video, do readings, and hand in homework on time), Using Second Life for educational purpose would be a really good trial for IDT students. I am looking forward to experiencing the Second life.

EDIT 451- Post 6- Online Environment as a learning community

What is the first thought coming out when you hear online learning/ elearning?

I remember the first time when I hear this new leanring environment in 2001. I was thinking..."ok..who is going to be my teacher, and where are my classmate?"
Around 2001, I signed up a online English learning program, which allows you practice English speaking with people from other contry. This is my first Elearning experience. The other Elearning experience was in spring 2007, I first took a online couse at CSULA. To be honest, that elearning experience was so.........isolating.. and lonely. The only person that I have communication was my instructor. Ironically, we communicated by EMAIL only.

As we have learned so much in this quarter, we now know that IDT is appealing and boosting in educaiton field. A lot schools provide online courses for undergraduate even for the graduates also. The insteresting finding is some very aggressive schools even compete to each other, and enrich their technology so the students who taking online courses can have better enviornment and experiences. The other new trend that has been very popular is the Second Life world. Now, we have a whole new experience of online learning. All the classmates can meet in Second Life ,do the presentation in Second Life and listen to a lecture too. So now online learning is no longer isolating.

EDIT451-Post 5 -Metadata

Before I read this chapter, I have no idea about what Metadata mean.

Although I have been using and creating metadata for my class, school and daily so long.

Metadata is INFORMATION about a RESOURCE. In other word, Metadata is the resource's detail data or information.

Different Metadata comes different meaning:

Basic descriptive metadata (Called bibliographic metadata)

For example, title, Author, description, identifier, subject and keyword.

Contextual metadata:

Information about the objectives, target audience, audience levels and difficulties, and relative information about context can be categorized into contextual metadata.

Right metadata:

For example:

copyright, terms of use and contact information for obtaining permission.

Technical mtadata:

Format, platform requirements, software requirements and structural information.

Usage information:

Documentation and guides.

The major difference between metadata and database is that metadata is only for strucuring certain module/template and the information for certain module and template. In other hand, database is bigger and for store the data that we have and collect.

EDIT 451 Posting 4-Trends and Issues in Various Settings

A few years ago, I worked for a big educational center which is the very first company invented and implemented the digital media into their classes. Each teacher has to be trained to know how to use these digital media ex: CD, DVD, Vocabulary reader and so on. It was 2004. In that period of time, I didn't agree with that way. I thought it is just another marketing strategy to attract parents and tempt students.

To be honestly, when I worked for that company, I tried very hard to implement the DVD and the computer based program into my classes. I wish the students can learn more by learnign this computer based program. Unfortunately, most of the students did not continue to use it. In 2004, the population of computer users in each family was not very popular. Most the public schools don't offer the computer class in the normal education. For the students, they think that it is just like computer game. No further educational purpose.

But now, I realized why in that time, my students were not learned very well and continued on that program. Basically, the company's software is not professional. The program was not based on any theory. Students can't be motivated; the teacher don't have enought knowledge and capability to carry out the software.

I personally would like to bring the idea and the knowledge of IDT into my country. I would like to share what I have learned from the class. I would keep refreshing and updating myself. I am planning to create a group for teachers who is interested in carrying out the media into their class. We can have a community to share all this updated information.

EDIT 451 Post 3-Designers facing the crucial problems of developing nations.

What we have learned about IDT in the class is based on the experience, applications and development of USA. In chapter 23, the author discuss about the other two diverse countries distinguish from USA. The developing nations and industriliazed nation-Japan.

A IDT designer working in a industrialized nations and developing nations is entirely different situations. I would say working in a industrialized nations could be easier than working in a developing nations. The coming points are the crucial problems that the develping nations need to face.

1. The extremely scarce financial resources available in the nation

2. The societal inpact of intervention of the plan and evaluations.

3. Nowadays, the adults are acute and diverse. p.236

4. The developing nations still are influenced by their colonial past.P237

IDT desingers should have the concepts that the world is one, but it's one in diversity. There are many world inside.(Jan Visser)

EDIT 451 Post 2-EPSS-electronic Performance Support Systems

Using EPSS into training seems to be a big trend in the future. As we have read the examples in our textbook, I want to share more examples that I have known before. Until I finished reading this chapter, I realized that actually there are so many companies, organizations and schools have been using EPSS.

My relative works for CITI bank USA in the back office. Every three months all the entry level employees have to accomplish a computer-based training program and finished a computer based test. If the employee fail the test, he or she will need to retake the program again and the test by using their downtime. This EPSS training reduced the waste of costs, and human resources. CITI bank saves money by using EPSS training. On contrary, about 6 years ago, I have an part time job opportunity to work for Telephone Marketing Center, CITI bank Taiwan. I remembered all the new hired telephone marketing sales have to attend a 5 days training program which is from 9:00-16:00. The training program was great. But they spend a lot of money on preparing handouts, booklets, slide show, speech and so on. Compared to CITI Bank USA, EPSS training not just saves time but also save money and other unecessary wastes.Back to CITI Bank USA, employees will have to review all the policy, process and job related information every three months. It helps employees review and EPSS training can be continue sly implemented to every new hires.

UCLA CTS is engaging a ticketing system which can generate a serial numbers for customers.
For example, when students call help desk ask about thousands questions, the system will assign the students a number which will be a reference No.. So the supervisors can track how many questions have been solved by help desk staffs. This EPSS helps the whole help desk save time on transferring calls, refer calls to certain staff who helped this customers last time. And supervisors can observe each help desk staffs' performances.

Most companies may still consider that building up a EPSS training may cost more. I have to admit so far, the successful cases we have read are from big companies and schools. However, we can't deny from some point of view, EPSS training has its mastery. It still has a great future to be explored.

EDIT 451 Post 1 -Formative & Summative evaluation

Designers, observers or decision makers can improve their process by using formative evaluation. Implementing Formative evaluation provides the evaluation of the process. Therefore, the formative evaluation can be carried out when designers or decision makers are planning the whole design. Formative evaluation is more like evaluating while doing it. On contrary, summative evaluation is like a final evaluation that you can observe if there is any specific results. Summative evaluations will be implemented in the end of a project, a design or a products.

To be honest, years ago, when I was still a teacher, I didn't really use any evaluation to evaluate my lesson or my students. What I have been doing was to give tests to students. And the tests result are my consequences for evaluating if my contents/lessons are suitable for my students or not. After I started the program, I realized that evaluation has been a part which I always ignored but indeed it is important.

According to the textbook, it mentions most of the industries tended to continue to rely on learners responses to postinstrucion attitude questionnaires(summative evaluation). By my first job experience in USA, I observed the situation that we have in our department. After every computer training workshop, we will encourage our participants to do an online evaluation for the workshop that they take. The questionnaire is here http://www.calstatela.edu/its/training/sstp/

The department believes that this after-workshop evaluation can help them to improve their workshop. But in my opinion, this evaluation results don't actually provide meaningful information. Because this evaluation indeed is not well designed, the supervisor actually can't really know what we can improve or what we can do more. For example, we have a lot of students response that they feel they do learn something, but after the class, they usually forgot what they learned in the previous weeks. I think that is because the workshop tempo is fast, and in the end it doesn't provide enough practice for students to review again. So if they use formative evaluation while they design the workshops, they may revise their design process a little bit to make their workshop design meet the participants' expectation.

In summary, as the textbook mentions, industries still prefer using the summative evaluation which is a good method to observe the conclusion and continue further revision. However, formative evaluation provides us more information while we are in process. Doing by revising would make our designs more accurate to meet our goals.

The paper handiwork exhibition

UPDATE!
The exhibition is coming to USA.
In 2008 at Seattle, Boston, and New York!

This is an exhibition in National Taiwan Demacrocy Momerial Hall.

My mother is one of the exhibitors,

In these pictures, you can see there are 4 little kids wearing 4 different costumes which are

made of paper. All these costumes are made by my mother.

My mother is a paper craftwork teacher in Taiwan.

They are invited by Cultural Division TECO in Los Angeles

There will be an Paper handiwork exhibition in October in LA.

and Washington D.C.

I will list the location , date and time.

Hope you guys can enjoy the magic paper world!!

Deal with "BUSY BUSY parents"

Once upon the time...
we, as a teacher, are so proud of ourselves.
we conduct our kids on the right path,we teach them the ancestor's' knowledge ,
and lead them to create their own imagination, this is what we say "Education"

Are you still proud of yourselves now?
Do you sometimes feel frustrated?
Have you ever met your kid's parents only one time in a semester?

Have you ever encountered a great difficulty in communicate with parents, when their kids were in troubles?

If you your answer is YES,
Now we need to think about the other way to face this problem!

Nowadays, people check email everyday. some people like me check email at least 20 times a day. I spend around 1-2 hours surfing Internet(not including working hours). Therefore, half of our parents is possible that they check email several times and surf Internet for a while during their break time or office hours.

So Blog! may be the best way to communicate with your parents!
They might have no time to show up in the Parents conference. They might have no time to make a phone call with you.

But they do have time to take a glance of your blog.
If you could make your blog meaningful to them!

How could you make your blog meaningful to parents?
Leave your comments!

Be the one to handle with "digital natives"

How many of us are afraid of handling this situation?
Most of us started to learn MS office around 25-35 years old .
I "heard" MS PowerPoint at my age of 23.
On the other hand, let's take a look around our young kids, they know how to use MS word in the elementary level, and they are familiar with MS PPT in Junior high school. Some of the senior high students even know how to use Dreamweaver/Mozilla to build up a website.

How about us??

Never never too late~~

Blog is one of the best tool that we can catch up on them!!
Blog provides publishing post, sharing photos, music, and video clips.
Not that all, we can leave our comments of a photo, a post, or a music.
And we can response and be responded.

Think about that, we can create our lesson plans and syllabus on our blog.
Also, the preview, class discussions and after class discussions can be posted on our blog.
Students have to leave their comments on each of the follow up posts, and also need to publish their own opinions on their own blogs! It's just like what we are doing now!

Furthermore, the class subjects could be various presentations. For example, videoing a clip for introducing a musician, a weather, a season, a bug, an animal and so on. Or recording a sound, a voice, a song of group members. Or a group of people video a short clip for their own presentation.

Once we become a master of blog!
We are no longer afraid of handling our digital native kids. We are going to lead them to a path of learning. Also we will share and grow up our digital knowledge with our kids!

I was a pioneer, but I failed!

I started using website to publish my journals for 6 years.
In the very beginning, I thought it is cool to publish your opinion on the web(web1.0)
I was so shy to show up my name and pictues at the beginning.
After several posts, I got more and more responses from others.
some of them are teachers, some of them just "stop by".
I realized that "Newstation"(around 2002-2004,we named it as "News station")
can be a great platform of experience sharing.

Someday, we,a group of teachers, gathered together, and talked about
having a website that we can share teaching experience, pictures, lesson plan and jobs posts.
As follow, it is my first official website of my personal life journals and teacher sharing platform.
http://v2.groups.com.tw/index.phtml?group_id=teslandtesol
We also add each other's website to make them all linkable to each other.

The idea continued in my mind. I started to plan a website that can communicate with my students. But it was failed. Because most parents considered that is timewasting. And students thought they are not going to get any credits from that website. Because of the "grades-orientated", the plan didn't be accepted by most of parents and students. The plan has been stopped for 3 years.

Until......the world has been changed~~~^__^Y

The blog "things" became popular, and the interface of the web2.0 has more features which enhance the communication tools more available for all web visitors.

I think I still have chances to bring back my ideas now!
